The Portable Jack London Alfred Kazin has aptly remarked that 'the greatest story Jack London ever wrote was the story he lived'. Newsboy, factory 'work beast', gang member, hobo, sailor, Klondike argonaut, socialist crusader, war correspondent, utopian farmer, and world-famous adventurer: London is the closest thing America has had to a literary folk hero. His writing itself is concerned with nothing less than the largest questions and the grandest themes: What does it mean to be a human being in the natural world? What debts do human beings owe every other - and to all their fellow creatures? This collection places London, at last, securely within the American literary pantheon. It includes the complete novel The Call of the Wild; such famous stories as 'Love of Life', 'To Build a Fire', and 'All Gold Canyon'; journalism, political writings, literary criticism, and selected letters. - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 461720080

The Girondins of Chile Reminiscences of an Eyewitness T'he Girondins of Chile tells of the strong influence that the European revolutions of 1848 had in Chile, and how they motivated a young Santiago society with high cultural aspirations but little political knowledge or direction. Benjamin Vicuna Mackenna, a Chilean writer and historian who lived during those days in Santiago relates the events of the time, events in which he was a participant. He pays special attention to how the '1848' revolutions influenced a group of young liberals he called 'Chilean Girondins.' When revolution came to Santiago in 1851, Vicuna Mackenna found even himself sentenced to death for taking part in the uprising. He escaped, spent some years in exile, and was able to return in 1855. He remained active in politics, yet his account of what happened to the 'Chilean Girondins' in the 1851-2 revolution was not published until 1876. - Books Reading - New - 461410014

Outbreaks From the Salem witch hunts and the storming of the Bastille, to the Holocaust, the Montgomery bus boycott, and the People's Temple mass suicide, extraordinary episodes of collective behavior fill our history books. In 'Outbreaks', Jerry D. Rose examines the social conditions that generate panic, nonviolent and violent protest, religious revivals, progroms, and the like-- and analyzes their connection to ordinary human behavior. Rose begins with an overview of traditional theories and approaches that have been applied to collective behavior and the introduces his own framework. Four chapters are devoted to the different categories of collective behavior: Disasters- when social systems are unable to sustain the resources required for their own continuation Protest- when unusual or extralegal tactics are used to achieve a political goal Persecution- when persons or behaviors viewed as threats to the social order are sought out and suppressed Renewal- when people work to change what they see as a growth in moral indifference and corruption Each chapter examines the background causes of the episodes; participation (who starts or joins); process (how the episode develops and how the spectators, participants, and authorities interact); and the consequences (the success or failure of the action and its 'side effects' and by-products). The final chapter revisits the realm of the general theory of collective behavior, seeking new, coherent, empirically valid insights into the role of the episodic dimension in human behavior Rose brings the subject alive with numerous examples of collective behavior, from the panic created by Orson Welles's 1938 'Martian invasion' broadcast to the eruption of Mount St. Helens, the Italian earthquake, the Miami riots, the Attica prison uprising, the purges in revolutionary Iran, and the growth of religious cults. - Books Reading - New - 461509874

sTORI Telling She was television's most famous virgin -- and, as Aaron Spelling's daughter, arguably its most famous case of nepotism. Portraying Donna Martin on Beverly Hills, 90210, Tori Spelling became one of the most recognizable young actresses of her generation, with a not-so-private personal life every bit as fascinating as her character's exploits. Yet years later the name Tori Spelling too often closed -- and sometimes slammed -- the same doors it had opened. sTORI telling is Tori's chance to finally tell her side of the tabloid-worthy life she's led, and she talks about it all: her decadent childhood birthday parties, her nose job, her fairy-tale wedding to the wrong man, her so-called feud with her mother. Tori has already revealed her flair for brilliant, self-effacing satire on her VH1 show So NoTORIous and Oxygen's Tori & Dean: Inn Love, but her memoir goes deeper, into the real life behind the rumors: her complicated relationship with her parents; her struggles as an actress after 90210; her accident-prone love life; and, ultimately, her quest to define herself on her own terms. From her over-the-top first wedding to finding new love to her much-publicized -- and misunderstood -- 'disinheritance,' sTORI telling is a juicy, eye-opening, enthralling look at what it really means to be Tori Spelling. - Books Reading - New - 461124799
