Understanding Biotechnology

Understanding Biotechnology

-- Complete coverage of Biotechnology for readers of all scientific and professional levels. -- Demystifies the notion that biotechnology is harmful to humans. -- Examines the social factors affecting gene therapy and stemcell research. Simply defined, biotechnology is the use of living organisms or their products for commercial purposes. Everyday items (such as breads and alcohols, grain crops) and animals (breeding) can be classified as the earliest form of Biotechnology. In the 21st Century however, Biotechnology is more accurately defined as the commercial application of living organisms or their products, which involves the deliberate manipulation of their DNA molecules. Implied in this statement is a set of laboratory techniques developed within the last 20 years that have been responsible for the tremendous scientific and commercial interest in biotechnology, the founding of many new multimillion dollar companies, and the redirection of research efforts and financial resources among already established companies (Pharmaceuticals most notably) and u - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 460842514 - Understanding Biotechnology

The Complete Fables

The Complete Fables

This definitive and fully annotated modern edition of the Fables is the first translation ever to make available the complete corpus of 358 fables attributed to Aesop, displaying his humor, insight, and savage wit, as well as affording fascinating glimpses of everyday life in ancient Greece. Earlier English versions have been both sanitized and highly selective. Aesop was probably a prisoner of war, sold into slavery in the early sixth century B.C., who represented his masters in court and relied on animal stories to put across his key points. These tales are brought together with other Aesop-inspired satirical tales, probably originating in Libya and Egypt. - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 461122871 - The Complete Fables - description

Three Soldiers

Three Soldiers

John Dos Passos had just returned from studying architecture in Spain when America entered World War I and - driven by the idealism that infected many young Americans (including Hemingway and e.e. cummings) - he joined up as a driver for the Ambulance Corps. His rapid and profound disillusionment forms the core of Three Soldiers, a fierce denunciation of the military and of the far-reverying social implications of its exploitation of young men. The novel focuses on three main characters: Andrews, a young composer who finally revolts against the war's deadening regimentation; Chrisfield, an Indiana farm boy who chants the words 'make the world safe for democracy' to himself in a futile attempt to block out the noises and terrors of battle; and Fuselli, a clerk who clings to the dream of becoming a corporal despite the mockery of his fellow soldiers. Required to renounce their individuality and to conform with unquestioning obedience, every one, in different ways, is ineradicably scarred by the dehumanizing effects of war. - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 461122982 - Three Soldiers in shop

The Song of the Lark

The Song of the Lark

Thea Konberg is a Scandinavian-American singer who rises from a one-story Colorado town to the Metropolitan Opera House. Along the way she struggles with the tension between nurturing personal vitality and achieving artistic sublimity. The enervated artist seeks solace in an isolated desert canyon where she experiences the epiphany that will transform her vision and art. As is characteristic in Cather's work, the western landscape both represents the inner lives of characters and regenerates their tired imaginations. - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 461122983 - The Song of the Lark - more info

Conjure Tales and Stories of the Color Line

Conjure Tales and Stories of the Color Line

Unlike the popular 'Uncle Remus' stories of Joel Chandler Harris, Charles W. Chesnutt's tales probe psychological depths in black people unheard of before in Southern regional writing. They also expose the anguish of mixed-race men and women and the consequences of racial hatred, mob violence, and moral compromise. This important collection contains all the stories in his two published volumes, The Conjure Woman and The Wife of His Youth, along with two uncollected works: the tragic 'Dave's Neckliss' and 'Baxter's Procustes', Chesnutt's parting shot at prejudice. - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 461122985 - Conjure Tales and Stories of the Color Line

The Schreber Case Sigmund Freud Translated by Andrew Webber With an Introduction by Colin McCabe

The Schreber Case Sigmund Freud Translated by Andrew Webber With an Introduction by Colin McCabe

Freud rarely treated psychotic patients of psychoanalyzed people just from their writings, but he had a powerful and imaginative understanding of their condition--revealed, most notably, in this analysis of a remarkable memoir. In 1903, Judge Daniel Schreber, a highly intelligent and cultured man, produced a vivid account of his nervous illness dominated by the desire to become a woman, terrifying delusions about his doctor, and a belief in his own special relationship with God. Eight years later, Freud's penetrating insight uncovered the impulses and feelings Schreber had about his father, which underlay his extravagant symptoms. - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 461123188 - The Schreber Case Sigmund Freud Translated by Andrew Webber With an Introduction by Colin McCabe

Synthetic Applications of 1 3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Chemistry Toward Heterocycles and Natural Products

Synthetic Applications of 1 3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Chemistry Toward Heterocycles and Natural Products

A comprehensive reference on the synthetic chemistry of cycloaddition reactions Dipolar cycloaddition reactions have found many useful applications in chemistry, particularly with respect to the synthesis of compounds with new chiral centers. Such asymmetric syntheses have a growing importance in the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries with respect to the preparation of chiral drugs and natural products. This much-needed volume updates the popular 1984 edition with advances made over the last twenty years in cycloaddition reactions. While the 1984 volume focused on theory, structure, reactivities, and selectivities, the new volume is geared toward synthetic applications. Both carbonyl ylides and nitronates, important members of the 1,3-dipole family that were not reviewed previously, are now included. Also, beyond the capability of the 1,3-dipolar cycloadditon reaction to produce heterocycles, the ability of heteroatom-containing cycloadducts to transform into a variety of other functionalized organic molecules, cylclic or acyclic, and the ability of many 1,3-dipolar cycloadditions to generate rings containing several contiguous stereocenters in one synthetic operation is discussed. Volume 59 provides the only comprehensive reference on the market detailing the synthetic chemistry of cycloaddition reactions. - Books Reading - New - 460843898 - Synthetic Applications of 1 3-Dipolar Cycloaddition Chemistry Toward Heterocycles and Natural Products - for sale

HyperClinic 2 CD-ROM for Windows

HyperClinic 2 CD-ROM for Windows

'HyperClinic is an interactive multimedia program appropriate for undergraduate microbiology students majoring in the health sciences or for medical students studying clinical microbiology. It is used very differently in the two modes. Allied health students are asked to evaluate a realistic case study that includes a patient history and description of signs and symptoms and to analyze the results of physician-ordered clinical tests to revery a diagnosis. Medical students will evaluate a case study scenario and then decide which clinical samples should be taken and which diagnostic tests run. Immediate feedback and prompts help the students evaluate their decisions. Animations and movies provide detailed information on how the clinical tests are conducted, providing the undergraduate with an excellent introduction to a clinical lab and providing a solid review for the more experienced student. - Books Reading - New - 461120005 - HyperClinic 2 CD-ROM for Windows in stock
