Optical Sources Detectors and Systems This text will be of interest to students, researchers, and systems engineers. The fundamentals of blackbody radiation, lasers, and optical detectors are developed in a unified manner and used for a quantitative formulation of measurement precision, communication and radar error rates, and imaging system sensitivity. The treatment includes a thorough explanation of photon, Johnson, and amplifier noise, as well as noise in avalanche photodiodes and optical amplifiers. Detector properties from D(asterisk) to RA product are defined and explained. Optical system concepts such as focal length, f number, field-of-view, and aperture area are then utilized to establish performance capability for both direct and heterodyne systems. Numerous examples and problems cover such diverse topics as medical thermography and laser speed detectors. This book emphasizes the basics and provides ample references to more detailed treatments and specific applications. - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 461719521

Introduction to Cryptography with Coding Theory This book assumes a minimal background in programming and a level of math sophistication equivalent to a course in linear algebra. It provides a flexible organization, as every chapter is modular and can be covered in any order. Using Mathematica, Maple, and MATLAB, computer examples included in an Appendix explain how to do computation and demonstrate important concepts. A full chapter on error correcting codes introduces the basic elements of coding theory. Other topics covered: Classical cryptosystems, basic number theory, the data encryption standard, AES: Rijndael, the RSA algorithm, discrete logarithms, digital signatures, e-commerce and digital cash, secret sharing schemes, games, zero knowledge techniques, key establishment protocols, information theory, elliptic curves, error correcting codes, quantum cryptography. Introduction Functional Programming This is a thorough introduction to the fundamental concepts of functional programming. The book clearly expounds the construction of functional programming as a process of mathematical calculation, but restricts itself to the mathematics relevant to actual program construction. It covers simple and abstract datatypes, numbers, lists, examples, trees, and efficiency. It includes a simple, yet coherent treatment of the Haskell class; a calculus of time complexity; and new coverage of monadic input-output. - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 461512587

In viaggio Moving Toward Fluency in Italian The idea for 'In viaggio, meaning Traveling, was born from drawing upon extensive work with oral proficiency and training. As the name suggests, with 'In viaggio students continue moving forward in their study of Italian, traveling throughout the regions of Italy and exploring Italian culture throughout the world via the abundant cultural material in the text. 'In viaggio focuses on and recycles seven major communicative functions, the punti chiave, throughout this Intermediate-level Italian textbook: describing, comparing, reacting and recommending, narrating in the past, expressing likes and dislikes, hypothesizing, and talking about the future. What is unique about this approach and these materials is the idea of narrowing the focus of instruction to seven communicative functions, all of which appear in every chapter from the very first day of the course. The functions are moved to the forefront of the course so students are consciously forced to look at grammar in a different way. 'In viaggio helps students focus primarily on communicative functions because - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 461407231

New Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin Like Carl Darling Buck's once standard Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin (1933), this book is an explanation of the similarities and differences between Greek and Latin morphology and lexicon through an account of their prehistory. In addition, Andrew Sihler discusses the principal features of Indo-European linguistics. Incorporating the considerable scholarship of the sixty years since Buck's edition appeared, this thoroughly new and up-to-date study fully integrates laryngeals in both the phonology and morphology, and the Indo-European verb system is presented in terms radically unlike Buck's. Greek and Latin are studied as a pair for cultural reasons only; as languages, they have little in common apart from their Indo-European heritage. Thus the only way to treat the historical bases for their development is to begin with Proto-Indo-European. In order to make a reconstructed language like Proto-Indo-European intelligible and intellectually defensible, Sihler presents some of the basis for reconstructing its features and, in the process, discusses reasoning and methodology of reconstruction (including a weighing of alternative reconstructions). New Comparative Grammar of Greek and Latin is a compendious handbook of Indo-European phonology and morphology, and a vade mecum of Indo-European linguistics - the focus always remaining on Greek and Latin. The non-classical sources for historical discussion are mainly Vedic Sanskrit, Hittite, and Germanic, with occasional but crucial contributions from Old Irish, Avestan, Baltic, and Slavic. A necessity for specialists and students with an interest in the foundations of classical languages, Sihler's study fills a major gap in theliterature of the last sixty years. - Category: Books Reading - New Item: 460768235

Crossing over One Woman's Escape from Amish Life Ruth Irene Garrett was the fifth of seven children raised in Kalona, Iowa as a member of a strict Old Order Amish community. She was brought up with rigid rules and intense secrecy in a world where the dress, buggies, codes of conduct, and way of life differed from that of other Amish societies a mere one hundred miles away. Her community uncompromisingly avoided all interaction with 'the English' -- everyone who lived on the outside. As a result, Ruth knew only one way of life, one way of doing things. This compelling true tale offers a striking look inside a hidden community as a woman comes to terms with her discontent and ultimately leaves her family, faith, and the sheltered world of her childhood. She bravely crosses over to a new and unfamiliar reality in hopes of better understanding her emotional and spiritual desires. The result is a powerful and inspiring story -- a search for meaning and the extraordinary lessons learned along the way. - Books Reading - New - 461117826

My Cold War My Cold War is the story of John Delano -- history professor, author, and brilliant fraud. At a small New England college he lectures on what others call 'History McNuggets' -- gimmicky glimpses of the 'surfaces' of our collective past. But as he struggles to write a major book on the Cold War, his life begins to fall apart. Revisiting the streets of 1960s suburbia, the JFK assassination, the Summer of Love, and other iconic moments, Delano begins to confront the personal history that he has kept buried for years. A trip into the heartland to reconnect with his estranged brother changes everything for Delano and forms the powerful, surprising climax of this extraordinary first novel. - Books Reading - New - 461117841
