Lindisfarne Gospels Wall Calendar: The illuminated manuscript known as the Lindisfarne Gospels is among the great masterpieces of early medieval book painting. It was produced early in the eighth century at Lindisfarne, an island monastic community near the coast of Northumberland. Its creators were Eadfrith, Bishop of Lindisfarne, and Ethelwald, who succeeded him in 721. Another monk is said to have further ornamented the Gospels during Ethelwald&146s bishopric. Except for the loss of its original binding, the Lindisfarne Gospels has survived virtually intact. Mackintosh Wall Calendar: In 1896 Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868&1501928) won a competition to design a new building for the Glasgow School of Art. That success brought him commissions for everything from mansions to tearooms. Mackintosh remained in Glasgow for two decades, designing buildings, furniture, textiles, and wallpapers. Then he left Glasgow and retired to painting landscapes in the south of France. Chiura Obata The High Sierra Wall Calendar: Born in Tokyo, Chiura Obata (1885&1501975) moved to San Francisco in 1902 and supported himself as an illustrator. He loved to wander California, painting landscapes; in one summerlong mountain sojourn he produced more than one hundred works. Obata joined the art faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1932. Interned during World War II, he was afterwards reinstated at Berkeley and retired as professor emeritus in 1955.
