Primitivist Modernism Black Culture and the Origins of Transatlantic Modernism

Primitivist Modernism Black Culture and the Origins of Transatlantic Modernism

Insisting on modernism's two-way cultural flow, Lemke demonstrates not only that white modernism owes much of its symbolic capital to the black Other, but that black modernism built itself in part on white Euro-American models. Through readings of individual texts and images (fifteen examples of which are reproduced in this volume), Lemke reforms our understanding of modernism. She shows us that transatlantic modernism in both its high and popular modes was significantly more diverse than commonly supposed. Students and scholars of modernism, African American studies, and cultural studies, and those with interests in twentieth-century art, dance, music, or literature, will find this book rewarding. - Books/Reading - Misc. - New - 460839092 - Primitivist Modernism Black Culture and the Origins of Transatlantic Modernism

A Most Detestable Crime New Philosophical Essays on Rape

A Most Detestable Crime New Philosophical Essays on Rape

This collection of original essays by leading philosophers probes the philosophical aspects of rape in all of its manifestations: act, crime, practice, and institution. Among the issues examined are the nature of rape; the wrongfulness and harmfulness of rape; the relation of rape to racism, sexism, classism, and other forms of oppression; and the legitimacy of various rape-law doctrines. Each contributor advances a novel argument and seeks to disentangle the conceptual, evaluative, and empirical issues that arise in connection with the crime. This essential reference work is among the first philosophical anthologies devoted exclusively to the subject of rape -- as complex and interesting intellectually as it is pervasive and disturbing socially. - Books/Reading - Misc. - New - 460839188 - A Most Detestable Crime New Philosophical Essays on Rape - on sale

Autobiographical Inscriptions Form Personhood and the American Woman Writer of Color

By engaging current approaches to the genre, Autobiographical Inscriptions breaks new ground in the field of autobiography studies. The book is centered in a discussion of the ways that innovations of form and structure contain and bolster arguments for personhood articulated by Harriet Jacobs, Zora Neale Hurston, Hisaye Yamamoto, Maxine Hong Kingston, Leslie Marmon Silko, Adrienne Kennedy, and Cecile Pineda. Organized thematically, with every chapter focusing on central questions of form, this work pairs canonized texts with less well-known works, reading autobiographical works across cultural contexts, historical periods, and artistic media, and illustrating the stunning range of formal strategies available to and adopted by the American woman writer of color. - Books/Reading - Misc. - New - 460839222 - Autobiographical Inscriptions Form Personhood and the American Woman Writer of Color

Mary Moody Emerson and the Origins of Transcendentalism A Family History

Mary Moody Emerson and the Origins of Transcendentalism A Family History

Mary Moody Emerson has been cast by generations of scholars as the 'eccentric aunt' of Ralph Waldo - a quickly, deeply religious woman who though the cherished epistolary partner of her nephew is herself worthy of no sustained critical attention. This biography suggests otherwise. This narrative rethinks both the extent of Mary's influence on her nephew and Mary's own historical standing as writer, thinker, spiritual seeker, and self-reliant, self-creating woman. Biographer Phyllis Cole, who discovered Mary's 'Almanack' in the Emerson family papers in 1981, introduces a self-taught, strikingly independent woman, a bold and philosophically gifted writer and fierce reader who chose solitude in nature over married life and other conventions. Her thought and language honored and discretely assimilated by Waldo from youth through old age, Mary not only connected Waldo to a rich ancestral and cultural past but she also formed the matrix in which Waldo developed his essential philosophic and aesthetic themes. It is through brilliant soul-making conversation between aunt and nephew, Cole demonstrates, rather than through typically cited sources such as Boston Unitarianism and English Romanticism, that Ralph Waldo Emerson's Miltonic mode of poetry and indeed his Transcendentalism took root and shape. Sifting Mary's private and published writing, previously unexplored ancestral texts and family lore, new letters to Waldo in dialogue with his long-familiar letters to her, and major and minor Emersonian writings, Cole tells a captivating story of intellectual and spiritual enthusiasm within a distinctive family and culture, a story that begins with the zealous generations preceding Mary's own andconcludes with her death in 1863 at the age of 88. Cole's pioneering focus on a life Waldo deemed 'purely original' unlocks a variety of new perspectives on late eighteenth- and nineteenth-century New England life and thought, and gives voice to a woman with much to say but from whom till now so little has been heard. - Books/Reading - Misc. - New - 461114742 - Mary Moody Emerson and the Origins of Transcendentalism A Family History - for sale
